Our college has loads of Steinway Pianos which is a real privilege. However we do give them a good pounding practicing on them all day every day. However at the Barbican lobby there was a covered up grand piano, with no one around and a few mates to egg me on, I just had to have a look! It was a Steinway, but it was so much better than any at college! You can tell when an instrument will be amazing when you open the lid and there isn't a single finger print on the perfect gloss finish. It sounded like liquid, and felt so responsive, like it was alive! Not only that but what I wanted it to sound like just happened, no need to try and bring a melody out more, it just happened! Amazing. I fully understood Ashkenazy words 'Steinway is the only piano on which the pianist can do everything he wants. And everything he dreams.' So true.
A friend sent this today of me playing it.
