Me and my family decide thursday to go away for the weekend down south. We head straight to National Trust's Petworth house before we stop over in a hotel. Petworth is a beautiful place known for its art, however of far greater interest to me was a square piano housed there!
Anyone reading play the piano? Then your know the sustain pedal is normally controlled with the right foot, not in 1807 on this beast, left foot all the way, confusing...
Chatting to the very friendly staff they say I'm not allowed to try it out, was gutted! However when I move into the next room some kid comes and just plays it, so they fetch me and tell me this lad played you can too. Showtime! Alittle bit of Schubert I thought would please the amassed 3 people, BUT, only about 5 keys worked, and those that did were hideously out of tune. Poor thing, it needs some TLC National Trust!
At college we slave away trying to perfect our Beethoven sonatas, yet if we played them on one of these things life would be a lot easier! The key of a modern piano has a far greater depth and is much much heavier than this period instrument, meaning players in these days had it easy!
